Welcome to Appathon 2013

A warm greeting to every participant. Thank you for showing an interest in the event. I will try my best to make this event as exciting as possible, and your participation will make sure that we enjoy this ride together.

If you haven't mailed me already, please do mail me ( info@lypas.com ) with the subject header Appathon 2013, so that I include you in the list of participants. There is no entry fee. You can enter in teams, or individually, and submit as many times as you want. And yes, there are loads of prizes to be won, so keep the excitement going.

I have come to understand that you have your Mid-Semester exam coming up, and I will arrange the event so that we kick-off only once the exams are done (Around the last week of February). You will be given topics on the day the event starts, and will have 43 days to work on your application.
I will keep updating this blog, and through this, answer your doubts, give you tips and compile the rules and regulations.

Watch this space.

  1. Do we have to develop the application itself and send it, or just the idea?

  2. The whole idea is to pitch the idea and develop the application. The development will test your creativity and your deployment skills. The first step ofcourse is to get the app running. And that the application should be working. Added points will be given for GUI and usability, since any user will want his application to be user-friendly.
The topics for the application will mostly be open ended, and will test your how well you adapt your application to the need of the day.
I will want all of your applications to be ready for deployment on the Android Market, so that we get some use out of the whole process. Deployment ofcourse is mandatory, but that we shall discuss later.
For now, I shall launch the Rules and Regulations soon, and we can discuss more whenever you all have questions.

  3. The thing is, I am not aware of the technical aspects of developing an application. Could you suggest something?

  4. Google has a very good tutorial on building your first app. http://developer.android.com/training/basics/firstapp/index.html

Once this is done, you can go on and start developing according to your application. The thing is, that the development part is not that difficult. But getting the environment ready is another important thing. Do that right away, and you can start developing.

It isn't very difficult once you get the hang of it. And just 3 days, and you can be a master at it. Understand the architecture well before proceeding. Understand how every part of the application works together. Get to know the interactions of activities, intents and the way each one plays a part in the functioning. Once that is done, app development will be a piece of cake.
This should be a good beginning! Do let me know if you need anything more. The possibilities are endless.. :)
